About Sligo

With one of the greatest concentration of megalithic monuments in Ireland, Sligo boasts a landscape as rich in lore as it is in beauty . Sacked by the Vikings at the beginning of the ninth century, Sligo came to prominence once again in 1235, when the de Burgo invasion overthrew the local chieftains. The land was granted to Maurice Fitzgerald, Lord of Naas - who founded a castle and friary there in the years that followed. Now destroyed, the castle once stood on what is currently Castle Street. During the Great Famine, Sligo's population fell dramatically by a third through either death or emigration. By the end of the last century though, the town experienced a significant turn around, becoming a busy centre and hub of activity.

The most celebrated of all of Ireland's poets, W.B Yeats was born in Dublin - his mother, however, was from Sligo, where he spent a lot of time as a child. Yeats visited Sligo frequently - periods which led to the inspiration of the poet in many of his future works, drawing spiritually from the county's scenic landscape and sense of place.

A litany of places and monuments pay homage to Yeats in the town of Sligo, and indeed in the areas surrounding it. At Drumcliffe, by the foot of Benbulben, where the poet is buried, a memorial stone complex has been built incorporating an audio-visual presentation about the poet, complimented with a craft and coffee shop. A sculptural portrayal of Yeats stands on Stephen Street, in Sligo town, inscribed with lines from the poets works, many relating to the 1916 Rising.

Some of the other attractions to look out for in Sligo include:

Carrowmore
This is the largest cemetery of megalithic tombs in Ireland. Over sixty tombs, as well as a variety of dolmens, stone circles and passage graves have been located by archaeologists. Some of these date from 4000 BC, with the oldest pre-dating Newgrange by some seven hundred years.

Culkin's Emmigration Museum
Culkin's Emigration Museum relives a poignant era when emigration was the only hope for a better life, and when families were scattered all over the world. The museum stands on a site that was once the gateway to new worlds, in the form of Daniel Culkin's Shipping and Emigration Agency.

Sligo County Museum
The Sligo County Museum and Library houses the Sligo Branch Library, Museum and Niland Gallery. The Museum was established in 1955 by Nora Niland, and contains two distinct collections: one of material from Yeat's, and the other a collection of local artefacts and geological samples

Sligo Abbey
Like many Norman towns in Ireland, Sligo originally had a castle and an abbey. The former has now disappeared, but the Abbey is still preserved. Originally a Dominican Friary founded by Maurice Fitzgerald around 1252, it was accidently burned down in 1414 when a candle, left carelessly in the building set it on fire.

Woodville Farm
A guided tour of Woodville Farm takes you through mature woodland, green fields and historic farm buildings. A variety of farm animals, including some rare breeds live in their natural surroundings here.

Lissaddel House
Lisadell holds the legacy of generations of colourful Gore Boths including pictures and artifacts collected by Sir Robert on the Grand Tour. Lisadell is a fine but austere example of Greek Revival architecture.

Sligo Art Gallery
Located in the Yeats Memorial Building at Hyde Bridge, this Gallery was founded in 1977 under the auspices of the Yeats Society. Its aim was to provide exhibition facilities for all art forms. The gallery houses fifteen to twenty major exhibitions annually.

Drumcliffe Church and Visitor Centre
Drumcliffe is the final resting place of W. B. Yeats, one of Ireland's greatest writers. When visiting Drumcliffe, take the opportunity to view the film animation 'Saint Columba and Drumcliffe' and discover Drumcliffe as an important sixth century Christian site.
